To and Through College

We at Schoolzilla love This American Life (TAL), especially their education coverage.  The recent episode “Three Miles” is a great example. It tells the story of three kids from a school in a poor NYC neighborhood who were part of a program that took them to visit a very fancy private school nearby. The three students the story focuses on are all amazing people – incredibly bright and thoughtful. If anyone could make it, if anyone could graduate from college, you’d think these three could. And yet, at the end of the story, only one of them has.

Five Hiring Practices to Build Your Data-Driven District Culture

There is growing consensus that schools need so much more than annual standardized test scores to understand students and inform the teaching and learning processes. To holistically understand and help students, numerous classroom-level assessments that span different question types and delivery methods – along with behavior, attendance, intervention, and a host of other data points – require attention.

This increasing demand for thoughtful data use in schools drives the need to build out school-level and central office teams with data-friendly attitudes and data-savvy skills.

Schoolzilla and State Compliance Reporting

Data Quality Is Everything

On August 17, 2014, the New York Times published an article titled, “For Big-Data Scientists, ‘Janitor Work’ Is Key Hurdle to Insights.” The article discusses the struggles facing several startups that offer products and services related to big data analysis. The article’s title refers to the critical and often unseen process of cleaning data to improve accuracy and usefulness. “Data scientists,” according to the article, “spend from 50 percent to 80 percent of their time mired in this more mundane labor of collecting and preparing unruly digital data, before it can be explored for useful nuggets.”

Schoolzilla is not in the “big data” business. Big data is all about aggregate trends. While of course Schoolzilla can do that too, we like to think of Schoolzilla as helping educators solve smaller and often more important data problems, such as highlighting challenges and achievements for educators, administrators, and family members (whether at the individual, group, classroom, teacher, grade, district, subgroup or district level, among other things). Having said that, we believe that consistent data quality and accuracy is among our most important early contributions to our customers’ success.
