About Mayra A. Lara, Ed.D.
Dr. Mayra A. Lara serves as Senior Practice Associate with The Education Trust–West after ten years of classroom teaching experience in the Los Angeles Unified School District. In addition to her duties as an English teacher, Mayra served as department chair, union representative, and coach. She has also contributed as a lecturer at California State University, Long Beach in the College of Education. As a Teach Plus Policy Fellow, Mayra worked on projects specific to teacher retention and developed professional learning opportunities for teachers in California’s Central Valley. She received her B.A. in English Literature and M.A. in Social and Cultural Analysis of Education from California State University, Long Beach. Mayra also holds an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership for Social Justice at Loyola Marymount University.
About Thomas Soto
Thomas is currently the deputy principal at Sanger High School in California. Previously he held roles as an English teacher, an English Curriculum Support Provider/Department Chair, and a Secondary ELA District Instructional Specialist. Within the 17 years of his career in education, Thomas has worked with students from a variety of backgrounds including: low socioeconomic status, special education, English Language Learners, GATE, 504, and with other students of diverse backgrounds. Thomas is a member of the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project, California Association of Teachers of English, and the National Council of Teachers of English. Thomas has participated on several curriculum assessment panels for Smarter Balanced, California High School Exit Exam, and California alternative assessments. He also served on several visiting teams including Western Association of Schools and Colleges and California Gold Ribbon. Thomas earned his Bachelors of Arts in English and single subject teaching credential in English at California State University, Fresno. He also earned his Masters in Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix.
